It's 1191 AD. That's when, history fans, the Crusaders were bussin' up the Saracens in Jesus's former patch. It's round three of the Crusades and the conflict is threatening to tear the Holy Land apart. And that's where you come in. You play as Altair, a sort of medieval hoodie and member of the assassin's creed, the Hashashin, who off people for money or sometimes on point of principle.

Altair is one of the more honourable assassins and he wants to bring an end

to the war by killing those responsible.

It's an interesting and original premise, but the best part of Assassin's Creed is its size. You have the run of a three massive Middle East cities to explore and sneak about in.

There are countless side jobs as well as story missions and how you complete them is totally up to you. You can sneak, you can mingle in the crowds or just run in there and kill every last motherfucker in the room.

You have a sword, a dagger that you keep up your sleeve and a set of throwing knives while the combat system is superb. You can either button-mash to take down multiple enemies or counter-strike, waiting for the right moment to stylishly kill your enemies with one blow. Most of the enemies, like the local OB, aren't too bright, but you'll still have to keep your head down or they'll be after you in numbers.

The graphics are awesome in terms of both characters and backdrops and there is no 'pop-up' – you can see everything in the distance, allowing for spectacular vistas over the cities and landscapes from any vantage point. Believe the hype.

Assassin's Creed is a – wait for it – 'killer' game: immersive, intriguing and truly amazing to look at.

X360, PS3 and PC.
