From the moment you're literally chucked in at the deep end (your plane has crashed in the middle of the Atlantic), you know Bioshock is going to be quite something.

It's set in an underwater city called Rapture, where you have to piece together what's gone wrong with the utopian society while surviving against its less friendly inhabitants like 'Splicers' and 'Big Daddy', which is something nasty in a deep sea mech suit accompanied by a spooky little girl.

The graphics are stunning, the fine detail of the art deco setting will have you just wandering around looking at stuff like a Japanese tourist. The water effects and the gore are particularly well done, which we like, obviously.

To help you in your survival, you can utilise everything from the brutal but effective monkey wrench to revolvers and old-school machine guns (this is the 1930s), and handily Rapture's fucked up residents have left their drugs lying around the place.

Injections of these weird 'enhancements' give you powers like telekinesis and the ability to fire lightning from your left hand.

Little details like being able to catch grenades and chuck them back add an extra dimension that raises Bioshock over your ordinary FPS. A must-buy.
