Fear 2: Project Origin

New spooky shoot'em up

Fear 2: Project Origin

  • PC & Console
  • Released: 12/02/09

Continuing the original FEAR story, this game invites you back to the city of Auburn for a seriously eerie shoot'em up. Taking place right after Alma's explosive aftermath, you're part of a crack team sent in to investigate the events.

The level environments are pretty immersive and help build part of the horror aspect of the title. The interactive cover is a great little touch in this completely interactive environment – kick over tables using the action button and duck behind them for cover. The enemy A.I is top notch – they'll hide and avoid just like a real player and panic when you're causing chaos. This game really aims to stand out from the crowd with its added psychic capabilities that you develop as you play through the game, which in turn connects you mentally to spooky little girl Alma, giving you eerie visions. You can also dispatch your foes via a huge arsenal of weaponry, shotguns etc, which includes mech suits that will let you turn every enemy into red mist later in the game with a flick of the button.

You'll encounter a wide variety of dead (not zombies for a change) enemies in the form of spectres and ghosts. The best are the puppet masters, which appear to be normal people at first (like old ladies in the park), but they'll soon turn when you get to close and reanimate the dead around you to kill you.

Filled with brown-pant moments, scary jumps and moody music, you'll experience a new kind of survival horror which will keep you busy till Resi Evil later this year. Yes sir!
