OK, so it's elves and shit. But get over those mental images of the wannabe wizards that turned up to the launch of World Of Warcraft - Oblivion is genuinely such a good game that it will suck you in and take over your life. Create your own character from a massively customisable menu of options, then go out into the world and play the game according to your own rules. Hundreds of caves, dungeons, ruined forts and abandoned temples provide the spoils; murdering and robbing for profit provides darker fun. You can learn to mix drugs, cast spells, fight in the streets of its many cities, hunt in the forests, ride horses across vast, beautiful landscapes, buy and sell gear in the markets or just go to the pub - literally whatever you want to do, whenever you feel like it. Follow missions set by Guilds or random fellas that approach you in the streets or boozers. Or you could follow the main storyline if you fancy it, but there's no pressure. There are potentially HUNDREDS of hours of gameplay in Oblivion, such is the variety and free-roaming nature of the game. Brilliant - buy it, take a month of work, sack the missus and surrender to your inner geek.
